Is Divorce Mediation Confidential?

  • All mediation processes at Alliston Resolutions are confidential

  • Information about your mediation will be shared with outside parties only if you and your ex consent to it

  • The confidentiality clause is part of the Contract to Mediate that ALL parties in the mediation will sign before the mediation begins

How Long Does Mediation Take?

Each couples' process is unique. How quickly they move through mediation will depend on several factors including:

  • How prepared the parties are (prep materials will be given before mediation starts)​

  • Level of cooperation and amicability between the parties

  • The parties' schedules

  • Access to information such as pension and asset statements

Is Mediation Legally Binding?

Mediation at Alliston Resolutions is confidential and not legally binding until the parties have had their agreements written into a Separation Agreement and have had it signed and witnessed.

How Much Does mediation Cost?

  • The hourly rate is $235/hour + HST 

  • The cost for an Agreement Document is approximately $695 + HST, depending on how many sections will be needed

  • A deposit is required, it is usually in the range of $400 - $800 per person

Can A Mediator Write A Separation Agreement?

Do I Need to Hire a Lawyer?

  • Many people choose mediation because they wish to avoid the excessive cost of lawyers. Lawyers can advise you in ways that mediators are not allowed to. However, in Canada, you are free to make your Agreement with or without lawyers - the choice is yours

  • ​The following statement was directly from the Government of Canada website. It has since been removed, but is still 100% true: "You can prepare a separation agreement on your own, or get a lawyer (or notary in Quebec and British Columbia) to prepare one for you."
